BEAUTY OF IMPERFECTION

I have used the process of devoré here as a vehicle to explore the notion of accepting imperfection.

The Japanese concept of wabi sabi finds beauty in imperfection and devoré is a sophisticated and elegant process that is by nature an imprecise and destructive one taking away some parts of the textile structure while leaving others intact. This creates a vulnerability in the fabric. The acceptance of small imperfections and marks acknowledges their presence as an integral part of the work and distinguishes the hand of the maker from the machine. The material is viscose silk satin, a very sensual fabric tha,t combined with devoré, is a perfect vehicle for subtle layering of colour and pattern

MANDARIN & GOLD

Cinnebar, the orangey red mineral of mercury, has from the earliest times been associated with alchemy and magic. In eastern philosophy red is the colour for the root chakra associated with being grounded and connected to universal energies

In Japanese and Chinese cultures the use of red symbolises vitality, long life, happiness and luck.

Material: Viscose silk satin.

Processes: Double dyeing, devoré, mono-print, screen print, discharge, hand painting, bonding & stitching
